This year has been a great year for public high school ministry. Last year I received a phone call from a fellow youth pastor that had heard I was interested in sharing the gospel at Lincoln High using a public venue. A couple months later we met with a dozen students from Lincoln that shared the same passion. My friend had been successful with other Des Moines public high schools and found out that giving away free pancakes was the way to do it. After a few weeks of planning and prayer, we were on our feet, flippin’ flap jacks, and sharing the Word. We decided to call it Peace, Love, and Pancakes; existing to feed the body and the soul.
How does it work? The first obstacle is getting permission from the school, preferably the principle. Secondly, you need to find a place to meet and a teacher from the school who is willing to supervise. Once these 2 steps have taken place your planning team can pick a day of the week, select a time, and start gathering pancake paraphernalia. At Lincoln, we chose Tuesday mornings at 6:30 am. 20 – 30 kids come on a regular basis to eat pancakes and the hear the Word which is usually presented by a student.
A few weeks after the Lincoln ministry launched, our students from Norwalk and I felt we needed to do something similar at Norwalk High. One of our students was granted permission from the principal. Ironically, the choir director had specifically been praying for a ministry such as PLP to present itself at Norwalk!! We also had a sweet set up because the culinary teacher gave us permission to use the old cafeteria. This ministry takes place every Thursday morning. This past Thursday we had over 70 students eating pancakes and listening to the Word.
The Norwalk students have an outstanding testimony which has been a huge help in getting this ministry to launch without any difficulties. Of course, none of these ministries would exist without God’s help. I am convinced that He is the one that has paved the way for His Word to be made public in these schools.
It’s been a huge blessing to see OUR students stand in front of large groups of public high school teens and share what they are learning from the Bible. It’s great to know that Willow Creek teens are learning, but it’s absolutely fantastic to see them willing to get out of their “safe/comfortable zone” and share Christ with their peers.
The school year is quickly coming to a close and we have ONE PLP left at Lincoln and Norwalk. Please, pray that the gospel will be loud and clear to these teens. Pray that they will be excited about coming to PLP next year. Most importantly, be in prayer that the Holy Spirit will be working in each teen’s heart this summer.
Isn’t it exciting to know that we have direct access to a holy God who desires to hear our prayers?? Take advantage of that gift and pray for teen souls to be brought to Christ through Peace, Love, and Pancakes. Thanks for joining me and supporting this ministry!
